Dear Martin:

I just remembered another geographical question: How many states
must one drive through in going from Boston to San Francisco staying
within the U.S.? Curiously, a look at a map does not give the answer.
If one can drive from Kentucky to Missouri, then the answer is ten -
otherwise eleven. But there is apparently no bridge across the
Mississippi directly between these states, I don't know about car
ferries, nor do I know for sure whether the bridge at Cairo, Illinois
permits passage from Kentucky to Missouri without going through Illinois,
but apparently not.
